The key to having your advice taken to heart are these:

Make sure you understand where the person is coming from. Quit thinking of throwing in all the facts that you can give out to your counselee, but focus more on what the person’s problem is.  Listening is the key.  This wil spell out how the person will open up to you.  Encouragement for your counselee to discuss the problem in your own way.  Make sure that what your listener want is advice and not just a listening ear.  Otherwise, whatever it is you say will not be heard.  It will also help to evaluate yourself first, if you are equipped to help the person you are talking to.

The second thing to do after you have established your relationship with your counselee is to evaluate options and let them know each and everyone of them together with their pros and cons.   The option should come from him or her.  Inasmuch as you think that you know what he or she should be deciding on, the choice has got to come from the person who needs help.  That will be the third process. Letting him or her make the decision.
